12th International SCHWIND User Meeting in Oman a success

Numerous SCHWIND innovations enthuses medical specialists

Kleinostheim, Germany, February 2010

More than 150 participants from 27 countries came to this year’s SCHWIND User

Meeting on 29th and 30th of January 2010 in Muscat, Oman. The international

meeting, which was hosted by SCHWIND together with the reference clinic and

investigator Muscat Eye Laser Centre under direction of Maria-Clara Arbelaez, MD,

was all about innovative technologies and methods, as well as exchange of

experiences. The event provided a perfect platform for a well-balanced mix of

guest lectures and practice-oriented workshops. Therapeutic corneal surgery

represented one major focus. Renowned surgeons reported on their experiences

with the SCHWIND SIRIUS diagnostic system, which integrates Scheimpflug

imaging and Placido topography in one device. Great response received

furthermore two innovative SCHWIND technologies for corneal transplantation that

perfectly compliment each other. With the SCHWIND Artificial Chamber and the

Carriazo-Pendular, the donor’s graft is optimally prepared. Pachymetry-assististed

Laser Keratoplasty (PALK) with the SCHWIND AMARIS allows exact removal of

damaged corneal layers on the recipient eye.

The medical specialists were especially impressed by the excellent results with

SCHWIND’s unique corneal wavefront. Numerous presentations on „Complicated

Cases “showed that the visual acuity of patients with different optical problems

was significantly improved as a result of the treatment.

Of great interest were scientific thermodynamic measurements carried out by the

University of Applied Sciences, Aschaffenburg, at the Eye Laser Clinic

Recklinghausen, Germany (Diego de Ortueta, MD). Result: Despite a pulse rate of

500 Hz, the cornea is warmed less than 5 degrees centigrade during ablation with

the SCHWIND AMARIS. Another key part of the program was the topic

„Presbyopia treatment with PresbyMAX®“. In this regard, the scope of topics

ranged from treatment of „virgin eyes“ over re-treatments to the use of monofocal

intraocular lenses after a PresbyMAX® treatment.

The SCHWIND User Meeting proved once again to be a key platform for intensive

dialogue. This included, for example, experience exchange regarding advantages

and disadvantages of LASIK compared to surface treatments, which uncovered

significant regional differences. Communicative networking continued even during

leisure activities – ie. an excursion with traditional “dhow” boats. „The 12th

SCHWIND User Meeting was again an all around complete success. The direct

dialogue with a committed user family is a fundamental element of our company

philosophy from which our users and ultimately the patients optimally benefit“,

commented CEO Rolf Schwind.
